Musculoskeletal Kati Basti (Pain Relief)

When treating back, neck, and shoulder pain and general muscle tension in the body, Ayurveda has a very specialised approach. Ayurveda looks at each person individually and aims to relieve and restore all bodily functions when dealing with back pain or musculoskeletal disorders. There are many different causes for back pain varying from stress, poor posture, physical trauma, poor diet, and lifestyle to name a few. Symptoms associated with such disorders are inflammation, pain, stiffness, and restricted movements. When qualities of Vata (dryness, lack of movement, blood, and nerve flow) and Kapha (congestion, stagnation) toxins manifest in the muscle, fat, bone, and nerve tissues, the tissues become stiff, hard, immobile, and rigid, which results in pain and discomfort in these areas. This can ultimately affect the bone tissue, leading to an array of problems for the spine, joints, and muscles. Kati basti is a musculoskeletal treatment for disorders that involve muscles, ligaments, bones, vertebrae, and nerves.

The Treatment.

So you may be wondering how is the treatment delivered. A well, made of dough from black lentil flour, is placed over the problem area and filled with sesame or medicated oil heated to a specific temperature and held for a specific period of time. This helps to soften the rigid, tight, and hard tissue which results in easing pain and increasing mobility of the affected area. Once the dam is removed, a back massage is given.

The benefits of heat from the oil help to

  • Dilate local blood vessels to increase blood flow.

  • An increase in blood flow can reduce pain.

  • Heat reduces swelling thereby reducing pressure on nerve endings.

  • Blood flow increase provides more oxygen and aids in the healing process.

The benefits of the warm medicated oil work to

  • Soften and loosen dry and tight muscles.

  • Decrease stiffness and create elasticity.

  • Ease muscle spasms and increase range of motion.

Abhyanga Ayurvedic Massage

Skin is the largest organ in the body, it plays a major role in eliminating waste /toxins and our immune system. A combination of warm oil and massage may improve your health in many different ways. There are lots of advantages to using warm oil and massage together, one is the warm oil penetrates deeper into the various layers of skin and deeper tissues and promotes the body’s ability to flush and remove toxins. When combined with a massage it also revitalises the cells through the various channels of the body via osmotic pressure (movement) and muscle contraction.

Oiling the body has long been revered in Ayurveda. Now modern science confirms that the regular oiling of the skin keeps the micro-biome of the skin healthy, promotes a strong nervous system, improves gut function, and supports better sleep.

This massage helps to improve the lymphatic and circulatory system, both rejuvenating and detoxifying this massage is tailored to your specific constitution and season.

What is the lymphatic system?

Understanding the lymphatic system provides insights into the body’s profound ability to nourish and detoxify itself. In Ayurveda, it is the first system we treat. In modern culture, the most forgotten and least understood system in the body is the lymphatic system. The lymph travels with the nerves, arteries, and veins and is by itself twice as big as the arterial blood supply system- and maybe twice as important. The lymphatic system removes waste from every cell in your body, regulates the immune system, and delivers energy to the body in the form of proteins, glucose, and fatty acids. The lymphatic system helps to clear the body of harmful metabolic waste products into and take up nutrients from, a surrounding solution, called extracellular fluid or connective tissue. Over time the lymphatic system can accumulate waste products, this forces us to adapt to an environment of toxins and weakens immunity and other important pathways of detoxification. As we age, it is the ability to detoxify well and eliminate waste efficiently that will determine longevity and optimal health.

Shirodhara is considered a therapeutic and rejuvenating treatment for stabilising the state of mind and body, bringing them into harmony, Shirodhara works on a physical, mental, and emotional level.

Warm oil is gently poured into the centre of the forehead, (location of the third eye) in a steady rhythmic stream. The use of warm oils in Shirodhara helps in vasodilation of the blood vessels, improving blood circulation to the brain. Shirodhara can help soothe the hypothalamus, which activates the pituitary gland's regulation and reduces elevated serotonin levels and stress hormones.
